This program’s objective was to develop environmental education and conservation programs, which, in addition to providing direct benefits to the population around the reservoir, also aimed to raise ecological awareness in this population. The Environmental Education Program of the Lajeado HPP (abbreviated in Portuguese as PEAL), initiated in 1999, promoted environmental education in the municipalities around the reservoir with actions in Lajeado, Tocantínia, Miracema, Paraíso, Palmas, Porto Nacional, Brejinho de Nazaré, Aliança, Miranorte, and Ipueiras.

For its execution, a Working Group (WG) was established with the participation of governmental and non-governmental institutions related to environmental issues, such as Ibama, Naturatins, State Secretariat for Education, Federal and State Public Ministries and NGOs conducted by the Ecológica Institute. This WG continues today to act in the State Commission on Environmental Education of Tocantins. Through the PEAL, over 1,000 teachers from the Tocantins education network were trained in environmental education.

The Program was concluded with the edition and distribution of 5,000 copies of the PEAL Almanac, resulting from the training, courses, seminars and other events accomplished by the program. This material became a reference for schools and communities in the subsidy to lesson plans elaborations and in fomenting other actions, maintaining in this way its permanent character of support to the multipliers’ work.

During the Plant’s construction and implementation of environmental programs, six editions of PEAL’s Vertedouro newspaper were published, with a distribution of approximately 15,000 copies, publicizing the actions developed in the environmental area and the Plant’s works progress. The newspaper was distributed in schools, which extended its reach to communities around the lake.
